Cry my Beloved Government Secondary School Nyasoso

by Peter Mbonteh

Our beloved Government Secondary School Nyasoso---the legendary secondary school that has churned out a good number of Cameroon's elites; a school that was the dream of every aspirant from far and near; a paradise in the jungle because of its picturesque environment and the village hosting it; a school where the quest for academic excellence was a do or die affair; all of these, orchestrated by a battery of seasoned mentors and it's beautiful infrastructure. Nyasoso of legendary teachers like Forgab Njinju Peter (history), Tayong (literature) and Fomusso alias “Punctual” (English language) etc.

Each time I go down the memory lane I feel like turning back the hand of time. But when I look at the Nyasoso of today, I become emotional and indeed, I shed tears. Not only has time had its toll on the school, the current crisis rocking the two anglophone regions has plunged the school into a more sinister abyss. GSS or GHS Nyasoso as it is called today, is a hideout for rodents and separatist fighters. The one-time mythical administrative block has now been transformed into a cachet for hiding lovers. Soso as its fondly called, is, as I speak, a shadow of itself. Weeeh, who will speak for Soso?! Who will resurrect Soso?! Who will bring back those glorious days of Soso?! NEXSA should ponder on this.

GREAT SAM NWANJA'S FAREWELL THANKSGIVING CEREMONY

Great Nwanja and wife, Mirabel
In the report of the National EXEC Meeting of Nov. 2015 in Buea, a number of government appointments involving NEXSANs were published among which Great Nwanja Samuel Tambe featured as Cultural Counsellor (Attaché) to the Cameroon High Commission in South Africa. It is now time for him to move to Nelson Mandela’s country, his new station. So he decided to offer a Thanksgiving Service to God before he left. This Thanksgiving service took place on Saturday 09 April 2016 in Ekondo-Titi, the Sub-Divisional Headquarters of his Bekora village in Ndian Division in the South West Region of Cameroon.
NEXSA responded to Nwanja’s invitation by sending a powerful 8-man delegation made up of the acting National President, the SG, and the PR No. II, the President of Kumba, Nwalipenja Agnes, Musongo Emmanuel, Simen Matthew, Fombele Victor and Ngute Sarah. The NEXSAN delegation would have been bigger than this but for last minute work demands that affected some members.
The programme started at 11:00am instead of 9:00am. It comprised two parts: the Ecumenical Service and the Civic Reception. The service was led by Rev. Kulu Peter Mbua of the Emmanuel Baptist Church Limbe who was assisted by other Conventional and Pentecostal clerics. The sermon was drawn from Eccl.12:13-14. Prayers covered the general guests, the Cameroon-South African relationship to be a blessing and an open door to many and the chief celebrant, Nwanja that God’s ability should aid him in any inabilities he might encounter in his life and profession. The civic reception phase featured addresses from major political actors of the area notably the mayor of Ekondo-Titi and the CPDM Section President; His Excellency Dion Ngute the Minister Delegate of Foreign Affairs in charge of the Common Wealth was absent due to other state duties. The speeches added more meat to what we knew about Nwanja from the NEXSAN perspective - which our brother is, more than meets the eye. Firstly, his academic profile: The senior of first born twins, Samuel Nwanja had a 21 year non-stop schooling that began in Government Primary School Bekora through Government Secondary School Nyasoso (7th Batch), CCAST Bambili, University of Yaounde (Linguistics and French) and Ecole Normale Bambili. The CPDM Section President made sure to underscore that the egg for Nwanja’s prowess was laid in GSS Nyasoso (applause from the crowd). His career profile too spans a non-stop 23 years period that started as a secondary school teacher in Government Secondary School Tatum in the North West Region for two (2) years and Lycée  Classique de Bafia in the Center Region for three (3) years before being appointed as the first Private Secretary for the Minister Delegate of Foreign Affairs in charge of the Common Wealth where he served continuously for eighteen (18) years before his recent appointment as Cultural Counsellor in the Cameroon High Commission in South Africa.  It is not only his pedagogy and longevity in the Foreign Affairs Ministry that won him this covetous appointment. There is depth and scope to his in-house professional training: He holds severally, diplomas in Administration, Diplomacy, Public Administration and Chinese language. Being a polyglot in English, French, Mandarin, Pidgin English and Abor-Oroko makes him a citizen of global nations, a vital ingredient in International Relations, Politics, Diplomacy and World Trade. Without the shadow of a doubt, this kind of loaded profile is what has ushered Great Nwanja to be the first ever Cultural Counsellor to the Cameroon High Commission in South Africa, a new position that makes him to astride like a colossus, two and no longer one ministry: the Ministries of Higher Education and Foreign Affairs, with the onerous task to uphold and showcase those great educational, cultural, sporting and showbiz elements of a wonderful Cameroon people yet to indelibly stamp its mark on the world scene.

In respective responses, Great Nwanja thankfully acknowledged icons who contributed to his school and work profile with emphasis on His Excellency Dion Ngute, his former direct boss and Chief Ngende Frederick the pioneer principal of his Alma mater, not without drawing attention to NEXSA with two resounding “Great NEXSANS” slogan which the NEXSAN delegation resoundingly chorused “Great!” accordingly with reverberating effect, and all eyes turned to behold the proudly uniformly dressed NEXSANs in the conspicuous front row of the esplanade of the Ekondo Grand Stand.

The ceremony rounded off at 4:30pm with colourful traditional dances from various coastal tribes before all and sundry went for reception at the various announced venues. Great Nwanja gave NEXSA a deserved pride of place here again, to wine and dine with top dignitaries at the PAMOL Staff Club. From the buffet he led NEXSANs to his modern modest house in his village a few kilometers away. There, we, in a relaxed and informal manner, rubbed shoulders and further drank in typical NEXSAN camaraderie for 25 minutes. We left with an offer of a bottle of choice wine each by the chief celebrant.
It is just the first quarter of 2016 and NEXSA has seen two great events of the same nature (Thanksgiving) from classmates (Great Elung Paul Che and Nwanja Samuel Tambe) of the same batch; what an opportunity to salute the 7th batch in general as well.

NEXSA JUST ADDED A NEW Ph.D IN ITS LIST OF GROWING Ph.Ds

The acquisition of a terminal degree, Ph.D, is usually an academic journey less
Prof. Gehrmann, Dr. Manjoh & Prof. Alembong
travelled by many and to the few that have ventured on that very tedious and demanding academic journey, praise must be given to them and humility is expected of them, as well. This is a journey our sister, Dr. Mrs. Priscillia Musoh Manjoh dared, and successfully completed, and I have the singular pleasure to announce this great feat of hers and like one NEXSAN doctor once said, I AM GLAD YOU JOINED ME BECAUSE, IT WAS GETTING COLDER AND LONELIER UP HERE.
Dr. Priscillia M. Manjoh undertook her Doctorate in Philosophy from Humboldt University Berlin, Germany, where she successfully defended in front of a jury of five with Professor Susanne Gehrmann of Humboldt as her Supervisor and Professor Nol Alembong, Dean of Faculty of Arts, Buea University, as her Co-Supervisor. On a WhatsApp text message to me, the new doctor wrote, ‘Hi, I am very happy to
Photo with Dr. Manjoh's dissertation defense team
inform you that, I finally defended my Ph.D yesterday with good success.’
I am quite elated that she honoured me to break this good news to our pristine group, NEXSA. We congratulate you, Dr. Manjoh!
Husband celebrates wife's achievement
Dr. Manjoh’s dissertation is based on the Representations and Renegotiations of the Nation---guided by the Postcolonial theory and concepts of the nation as well as what nationalism entails. The work investigates the extent to which the hopes and aspirations of the people have been met since independence as represented in Cameroonian literature---and how the novelists---under scrutiny in the study, have proposed certain visions for the revision of certain aspects. The reader should be
Snare by Priscillia Manjoh
reminded that, Dr. Manjoh wrote her first novel, Snare, in 2013 in it she recounts the striking profile of the challenges confronted by Africans in a developed country. Representations and Renegotiations of the Nation could be her second one coming in little under four years. Remarkable! It will be an interesting read which markets itself beyond this write-up.
I am, by this piece, requesting of all NEXSANs to join me in congratulating Dr. Priscillia M. Manjoh, an Ex-Student of Government High School Nyasoso (NEXSA), my Alma matter, in saying, ‘A job well done!’

Celebrating and Paying Tribute to a Great NEXSAN, Paul Che Elung

Paul Elung Che, Former General Manager of Cameroon’s Treasury Becomes CSPH GM

(Business in Cameroon) – Paul Elung Che, 45, has been appointed General Manager of Cameroon’s Hydrocarbons Prices Stabilization Fund (CSPH).

In a decree signed by President Paul Biya, late Friday April 26, 2013, the new GM of CSPH replaces Ibrahim Talba Mala appointed GM of Cameroon’s National Refinery, SONARA last February.

Former General Manager of the Cameroon Treasury, Paul Elung Che was sacked on February 19, 2009 after one year in office. He was the pioneer General Manager (GM) of Treasury, Financial Cooperation and Monetary Affairs. After his dismissal, he remained in the corridors of the Ministry of Finance.

Before now, Elung Che had been Paymaster-General for the Northwest Region and later occupied the same position in the Southwest Region for over six years.

A graduate of Harvard University, in the USA with a Masters in financial management, Elung Che, after his first degree from the University of Yaoundé enrolled into ENAM (National School of Magistracy) Yaoundé, graduating two years later as Inspector of Treasury.

Paul Elung Che is now the new boss of Cameroon’s Hydrocarbon Prize Stabilization Fund (CSPH) who says hard work will be his watch word coupled with the thirst for quality output and ensuring the steady supply of petroleum products without destabilizing the prices.
Mr. Che’s appointment follows a presidential decree made public on Friday April 26 via national radio.
Paul Elung Che, 45, who replaces Ibrahim Talba Malla now General Manager of the National oil Refinery Corporation seems to have a mastery of his new job. “CSPH is in a strategic sector – energy. I know it is a price stabilization mechanism. If you have fluctuation in prices in the energy sector, it can lead to general inflation in the economy.” Che told state TV while adding that “We have the challenge of making sure that we have a steady flow of petroleum products in the market and more so, that the prices are stable.”
A graduate from the Harvard University in the United States of America with a post graduate diploma in public finance, Elung Che is a former Director of Treasury and a former student of the National Advance School of Magistracy and Administration, ENAM.
Elung Che is a financial expert and has held several posts of responsibilities in that domain. He is former Treasurer/Paymaster-General for the Northwest and South West Regions, National Director of Treasury in the country’s capital, Yaoundé and was Pioneer Director-General of Treasury, Financial cooperation and Monetary Affairs.

Great NEXSANs,

This appointment of Elung Paul is confirmation of the greatness of NEXSA by God's grace. NEXSA has really been blessed with similar high profile appointments that we can but only give the glory to God and be glad that we formed this Association to help showcase the alumni. Are there Nanje Jackson?

Yes, Elung Paul is a great one from the great alma mater. A few NEXSANs might really be able to size up what his profile really is. He is of the great 7th batch from which hails the like of Presidential journalist George Ewane and a host of other swells. A product of the elitist National School of Administration and Magistracy, Elung's first appointment was Paymaster of the North West Region, a rare appointment in Cameroon for a fresh graduate from ENAM; that was more than 15 years ago. He was later transferred as Paymaster for the South West Region. After some years he was raised to the position of Director of the National Treasury. After a year or so's stint, he was replaced and kept in the cold for a couple of years till his recent appointment as Director of the Cameroon Hydrocarbons Prices Stabilization Funds.

Elung Paul Che is a duly registered member of the Association and has always handsomely manifested in NEXSAN causes and engagements. We wish more power to his elbow while sending general kudos to the great 7th batch.

Thanks Great Bume for giving the scoop to the forum.

Thanks Mr. President of Nexsa USA for passing on our congratulations to Paul. Those of us who knew Paul i Nyasoso are not surprised that the qualities we saw in him from that early age are being recognized by the hierachy in Cameroon government. I expect Paul to go higher in his career. Cameroon can use people like him. There is something to be said about that fresh air from mount Kupe.

Best to you all,

"Congrats, Paul."

“Yes grand Eboa and all the others who are at the origin of this massive mobilization drive, it is vital for a brother whose talents have been recognized by the highest political authority of the land to feel the esteem and warmth of those who are close to him. In this regard it is legitimate and even well meaning for NEXSANS, to show solidarity with one of theirs who has been so elevated

But let NEXSANS and the happy appointee permit me to humbly give these pieces of advice. First to NEXSANS; beyond the euphoria and merry making that this occasion will generate, we have to understand that the responsibilities bestowed on our brother are enormous. Let us drink, eat, shout and dance; but when the chips will be down, what our brother will need most, will be good advice and above all, our prayers for God to guide him to discharge these duties with devotion, to manage this mammoth and strategic structure with administrative and financial competence, respecting the norms of the trade. In that way our brother, coupled with his brilliance, will be a manager worth emulating. I need not remind anyone that these are trying times in our beloved fatherland.
Now, to the appointee, Mr. Elung Paul Che, congrats once more. “Grand”, as you savour your very deserved appointment allow me say that throughout my travels in various countries I have observed that ex-students' associations everywhere in the world are networks where those who have arrived pull the others not to promote mediocrity, favoritism and tribalism, but to help open doors for those who are talented. I might be wrong, but I humbly think that unless an ex-students’ association functions like a league, a club and a viable network and encourages an upward mobility of its members, then, it is not worth its salt. NEXSA has been trying its best so far. In the past few days I have observed that most cabinet members of the British government are ex-Eton college London students. Christ College at the University of Oxford alone has produced at least 12 British Premiers. That is the spirit “cher grand frère”. All of that is thanks to networking and the provision of opportunities. Again, I would advise you to read the press. It might sometimes be a gauge to your management style. Many people have overlooked this sometimes to their detriment and above all, it always pays to listen to good advice

Finally, that is the kind of networking that I pray NEXSA should cultivate for the perpetuation of our cherished values. It's a shame that I will not be on the ground to join the great team in the joy.”

“Great Voltaire has sent the message already, so I need not reiterate. The importance of the presence of NEXSANS at this epoch- making event cannot be over-emphasized. In fact, numbers can play the track at times, especially in this era. I therefore entreat you all to be there and boost the moral of our hero, Elung Paul Che.”

Great Nyenti,

You could not have said it any better! I stand with you in that, all nine yards. This is the kind of thought-provoking discussions that we encourage! You have said your mind and we know the mouth speaks the abundance of the heart! You might not be there in person like some of us who would have loved to, but trust me, we would all be there in spirit. It is in times like these that we must stick together as a family and show the world that a brother comes from a family!

Fellow NEXSANS,

The installation of Great Elung Paul Che as the GM of the Hydrocarbons Price Stabilization Fund will hold tomorrow May 3rd 2013 at the company HEAD QUARTERS in Yaoundé (Carrefour Warda) at 11.00am.
I don't have the authority to summon NEXSANS but I feel it will but normal for us to be there.

Hi!

Yes, it`s really a great position of responsibility as you say. Congratulations Mr. Elung. You deserve the merit and you are up to the task. Like Mr. Nyenty rightly puts it, know we are all behind you especially in prayers. And those of us who can offer good counceling i know will do so.

May the Lord continue to guide and protect that which he has bestowed unto you as His servant and His chosen one. He will shine His light upon you in all your ways and "He shall give His angels charge over you lest you dash your foot against a stone". In Jesus Name.

Dear PAUL,

I wouldn't know how to put an article infront of your name and yet God in his greatness has chosen you in a position of greatness. Well, congratulations a thousandfold. We all join together to put you in prayers as you bequit your duties. May the grace of God guide and cover you where it has led you. We know you are busy and will be even busier from henceforth, but please find time once in a while to participate in NEXSA activities especially the forum. Yes, you have been contributing financially(we were told) but we would love to have the oppurtunity to chat with you sometime.

God's speed.

NEXSA] Minutes of the National EXCO Meeting held in Tombel

Minutes of the National EXCO Meeting held in Tombel on 16th February 2013
The following agenda was adopted after presentation:
1. Prayers
2. Singing of the School Anthem
3. A word of welcome from the President
4. Reading of AGM Report
5. Branch Reports
6. Matters Arising from the Report / Other issues
7. Financial Statement
8. 2013 Prize-Award
9. Economic Venture (NEXACO)
10. Closing Remarks
11. Dinner
The meeting which started at about 4pm with a timid attendance of 5members of the National EXCO commenced with prayers by Madam Ngeh Margaret, followed by the singing of the school anthem.
The President wished everyone a warm welcome, acknowledging the presence of the Vice Principal and the Senior Discipline Master. He mentioned the fact that he has realised that some NEXSANS come into the Association for personal interests and when these interests are satisfied, they leave the group. Others he said, back out when they think their personal interests are not satisfied.
Review of the Limbe AGM: It was said to have been successful though with some shortcomings which the National EXCO should take stock of in preparation for subsequent AGMS.
Commenting on the AGM Report, it was thought that the full report should have come from the National Secretary General instead of it being an addendum to the branch report. Reports for National occasions, it was decided, should not come from the host branches. It was also commented on and agreed that money raised during a National event, like the cutting of the cake did not belong to the host branch of that occasion. It belonged to the general body and should be taken care of by the National Executive. Ceremonial NEXSANS were warned of a tough time in subsequent AGMS, especially when it came to entertainment. Invariably, refreshment is smaller than the number of people it is previewed for, that is those who duly contribute towards the AGM. Ticketing members maybe a good solution to this kind of gate-crashing that is experienced at the AGM..
Branch Reports:
Bamenda was represented by Madam Ngeh Margaret who reported that Bamenda was still waxing very strong. Their meetings were still held on a rotational basis with an average of 14 active members who, she said, were “doing things for NEXSA”. Bamenda thought there was need for a new uniform given that the old ones are either faded, have been outgrown or some new members did not have it. They proposed the making of a new fabric entirely or the reproduction of the old one. The Bamenda branch commonly uses its uniforms in many occasions because it identifies them and sells the image of NEXSA. The Bamenda based resource persons for the economic venture were still waiting for the National EXCO to give a go-ahead for the drafting of the by-laws for the Economic Venture. All in all, Bamenda was doing well.
Douala, represented by its Secretary Balbina Mesue Ebong gave its Vice president’s apology to the group. The Vice president was unavoidably absent because he was hosting NEXSANS on that same day. She reported that Douala was doing good, thanks to the Njangi scheme – a leaf borrowed from the book of the Bamenda branch. There was an average attendance of 15members and meetings still took place every third Saturday of the month. Douala wondered aloud why Tiko was chosen over Douala to host this year’s AGM when the previous one had just taken place in neighbouring Limbe. All in all, Douala was doing well and promising to get better.
Tombel: The branch President, Mr. Ejolle Prisco reported that hosting was still problematic with some members promising to host but not keeping to their promises. Attendance, he said, was still at 14 members.
Reactions from Branch Reports:
Bamenda was congratulated for keeping on strong and for their enthusiasm in taking part in EXCO meetings with helpful contributions. It should be noted that Bamenda has taken part in every National EXCO meeting that has taken place within the present Executive.
Douala was appreciated for the effort they have been making despite the absence of a head. They were asked to keep on, legitimize what EXCO they have working now and continue on. Tiko, the President explained, was chosen over Douala to host the AGM because it is still growing and needs to be supported and strengthened.
The Tombel branch was told not to relent their efforts and in due course many more members will join them. The efforts of Mr. Ejolle Prisco who doubled as the National Financial Secretary were greatly appreciated.
The Financial Report: Before the Financial Secretary made his report, the President commented that NEXSANS should act responsibly. He was referring to the remarks made by a certain NEXSAN concerning the funeral of the Late Principal, Mr. Epie Njumbe which showed disrespect for the National Executive. He cautioned that NEXSANS should act before they talk and added that in this particular instance anyone could have acted on behalf of NEXSANS before castigating them. The Diaspora, which is a branch of NEXSA, should go along with other chapters so that things can move on smoothly.

2013 Prize Award Ceremony: It was suggested that the Prize award this year be low-keyed. The National body was going to send five representatives instead of all NEXSANS going to Nyasoso. This decision was made with regard to NEXSANS’ participation in the 40th anniversary celebration which will take place in the campus next year. Branches were reminded to start preparations early enough for next year. However, a budget of 200.000 FRS was voted for the prizes to be given out to deserving students this year. Just having contributed for the past AGM, members were not expected to contribute towards this prize award. However, donations are welcome.
Economic Venture: The three resource persons for the Economic Venture were given the go-ahead to draft the by-laws which will determine the signatories. The resource persons did not have to be signatories. They just had to come out with rules by which the group will work.
Other Issues:8883221122
- Re-greening of the School Campus: Mr. Inkwell Esung, the NEXSA Resource person and the campus re-greening champion was not happy with the state of the school campus in spite of his efforts to nurse and plant some trees. He thought the school administration was not giving the idea the seriousness it deserved. Mr. Etone Ngide, the Vice Principal, said the deteriorating state of the school campus was being taken care of. The Senior Discipline Master, Mr. Ekiti promised that there should be some change by May 2013. 34.000 FRS was approved by the EXCO for herbicides for use in the campus.
- Academically, it was reported that the school administration was doing a lot of work quoting as example the fact that the Principal himself teaches about 14hours of classes a week. The lower levels were said to be doing very well and the results of the examination classes this year were more promising. 90.000 FRS was allotted to the PTA as support from NEXSA.
- The constitution and the finance charter needed to be amended. Members should send in suggestions to be collated, discussed and adopted in the Tiko AGM. These amendments have to be done before this mandate expires.
- The idea of the creation of a Website as proposed by the Diaspora was welcome but needed to be expounded on, especially in terms of it benefit to NEXSA.
- Branches were expected to come up with a database of NEXSANS, that is, members of the association belonging to their branches.

To Sum up:
Only 3 branches were represented at the meeting together with 4 EXCO members despite the fact that the meeting was convened early enough and well publicised. Apologies for absence came from Mr. Ehabe Jerry and Mr. Ehabe Mpang Constantine, the National Sec. General and the Douala Branch Vice President respectively. The President was disappointed with this turn out and let down from his executive. The President gave a big word of encouragement to the Bamenda branch which has always made it to all NEXSAN meetings. And also, to the Douala branch, which has been functioning for a long time without a president. Other branches were called to wake up from their slumber.
